隋朝的禁军有十二卫，即为：左右翊卫﹑左右骁卫﹑左右武卫﹑左右屯卫，左右候卫、左右御卫。唐承隋制，沿袭隋朝十二卫，只是对其中几卫的名称稍作改动，并增加四卫左右千牛卫、左右监门卫，称南衙十六卫。

唐代南衙是中枢官署的统称，地处宫城之南，称为南衙或南司，十六卫府属南衙，由宰相负责，文臣主兵事，南衙卫士一般由各折冲府番上；宦官居北，称为北衙或北司，羽林亲军等禁兵属北衙，由皇帝亲信宦官负责，武臣主兵事，北衙禁兵一般为皇帝、太子亲兵。
有时南北衙兵将也会对调、互兼官职。?
